A hand tool<\/strong> is any tool<\/a> that is powered by hand<\/a> rather than a motor. <\/a><\/sup>Categories of hand tools include wrenches<\/a>, pliers<\/a>, cutters<\/a>, files<\/a>, striking tools<\/a>, struck or hammered tools<\/a>, screwdrivers<\/a>, vises<\/a>, clamps<\/a>, snips<\/a>, saws<\/a>, drills<\/a> and knives<\/a>. <\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hand tools have been used by humans since the Stone Age<\/a> when stones were used for hammering and cutting. During the Bronze Age<\/a> tools were made by casting<\/a> the copper<\/a> and tin<\/a> alloys<\/a>. Bronze tools were sharper and harder than those made of stone. During the Iron Age<\/a> iron<\/a> replaced bronze, and tools became even stronger and more durable. The Romans<\/a> developed tools during this period which are similar to those being produced today. In the period since the industrial revolution<\/a>, the manufacture of tools has transitioned from being craftsman made to being factory produced.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A large collection of British hand tools dating from 1700 to 1950 is held by St Albans Museums<\/a>. Most of the tools were collected by Raphael Salaman<\/a> (1906\u20131993), who wrote two classic works on the subject: Dictionary of Woodworking Tools<\/em> and Dictionary of Leather-working Tools<\/em>. David Russell<\/a>‘s vast collection of Western hand tools from the Stone Age to the twentieth century led to the publication of his book Antique Woodworking Tools<\/a><\/em>.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n
